Nigeria first participated at the Olympic Games in 1952, and has sent athletes to compete in every Summer Olympic Games since then, except for the boycotted 1976 Summer Olympics. The nation has never participated in the Winter Olympic Games.
The NOC is one of 205 National Olympic Committees currently recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It is the role of the IOC to lead the promotion of Olympism in accordance with the Olympic Charter. The Charter details the philosophy, aims and traditions of the Olympic Movement. Members of the IOC are co-opted and elected from among individuals it thinks are suitably qualified. Members of the IOC are its representatives in their respective countries and not delegates of their countries within the IOC.
A member of each of the Olympic sports makes up the electoral college of the NOC's decision and policy-making body. The NOC elects eight officers: a President, three Vice-Presidents, Secretary General and Deputy Secretary General. The Treasurer and Public Relations Officer complete the elected members who each serve for a four year term.
Itís the Board who are involved in more detailed work of the NOC and will also put forward specific proposals for decision by the NOC.
